Muffins & Jam...

Maxine - posted 5/31/09......Back to my passion - cooking! I made 2 different batches of muffins - raspberry/cranberry and blueberry/banana and they turned out really well. I also made some strawberry jam - and lots of it!

We went to The Den for Fish & Chips on Friday night and then last night we went up to Sugarbush to see the Big Basin Band. They're locally quite famous and very good. It was a benefit for Harwood High School and such a shame that there weren't more people there. If this had been in London the kids would have been made up to the nines and decked out in designer gear. However, this is Vermont and the kids wore jeans and t shirts, there was a distinct lack of make up and not a designer label in sight. It was really refreshing to see the kids enjoying themselves, dancing barefoot and totally uninhibited.

Well done Diversity for winning Britain's Got Talent. What a talent they are - step perfect and the choreography was fantastic. I also liked Stavros Flatley - VERY funny and good entertainment. Unlucky for Susan Boyle though - she sang beautifully and it brought a tear to my eye. Thank goodness for YouTube!

Butterflies & Paint..

Maxine - posted 5/29/09........I almost forgot to tell you......we were walking Beckham down by the pond the other day and on the the approach path we could see what looked like a little cluster of rocks about 20 yards ahead.. As we got closer the rocks turned out to be batches of huge butterflies all on top of each other. When we got to about 6 feet away they all flew up and into the air and towards us. We were surrounded by a mist of fluttering huge yellow and black butterflies - magical!

We have now have a freshly painted lounge. I'm actually quite pleased with the colour - sort of milky coffee - it matches the drapes perfectly and complements the leather and tapestry sofas giving the room a lovely warm glow.

Cirque du Soleil...

Maxine - posted 5/23/09........Have you seen the Cirque du Soleil production called LOVE? Some friends let us borrow the DVD of a documentary about putting together the production from conception to premiere. It's very moving and now we want to get to Las Vegas to see the real thing. We know that when - not if, when - we do, we're sure to shed a few tears of emotion as we're both big Beatles fans. Seeing the love and care that went into the whole thing from everyone involved, including Paul, Ringo, George and Giles Martin, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono to name a few, was truly humbling. That's the thing about the Beatles tunes - they conjour up such emotions and take you right back to where you were when you first heard them. Yoko Ono summed it up for me when she described the production of LOVE as the artistes performing gymnastics of the body and the music gymnastics of the mind.

Cup Cakes...

Maxine - posted 5/20/09........My friend Pippa, who lives in Gloucestershire in the UK, is a very talented artist and does fine embroidery and picture work using textiles. She sent me a picture of an amazing piece that she seem had seen on display at gallery close to her, called Cup Cakes, by an artist called Tanya Stayer. Graham & I fell in love with it at first sight but when Pippa contacted the gallery you can imagine our disappointment when we found out that it had already been sold. With Pippa's help we've managed to contact Tanya directly and are so very excited that she has agreed to make one just for us. I will let you know when it arrives - I can't wait to have it hanging in pride of place in the dining room! I love making cup cakes and have got lots of new recipes that I am looking forward to baking. Let me know if you think it's as groovy and fab as we do!

North Carolina...

Maxine - posted 5/15/09........Welcome back! Firstly apologies for not having written recently but there has been a lot going on here. I won't bore you with too many details but surgery at Fletcher Allen was on the agenda in mid April and now that that's all done and dusted - successfully - we're taking a little time chilling out in North Carolina on the Ocean.
I've been using my time searching out new breakfast and cake recipes to try out this summer and fall, using some of the fresh produce available in Vermont and Graham has been trying to prioritize our Inn renovation projects plans - of which we have loads, to make folks' stay here even more comfortable.
I think in another life, I could live here in Frisco but they'd have to do something about the quality of restaurants available. For a place that has an abundance of good quality fresh seafood, I have no idea how everyplace we've eaten manages to turn it into a tasteless, microwaved plate of lukewarm, bland mush! They could do with a visit from Gordon Ramsey and then follow his advice of "simplify" - just 10 freshly cooked, mouthwatering dishes on the menu would we great instead of 60 pre cooked, frozen TV dinners! Still, it's made Graham appreciate my cooking even more and we can't wait to get back to cooking tasty food on Mrs. Bridges, our AGA. Sampling the excellent restaurants we have in the Valley will also be a delight again.

Adaptive Skiing...

Maxine - posted 3/24/09........Mama Mia - was it cold here yesterday? Yes, it was very cold here yesterday. I took Beckham to the Sugarbush snow making pond and we walked around 3 times - Although it was sunny, the wind was blowing round the tops of my ankle boots and where my socks had slipped down, I now have wind burn on my legs. Last July, Beckham lost his favourite (pink!) tennis ball in the undergrowth there. Now the snow and ice has flattened everything and then melted away, the undergrowth is virtually non existent and there, sitting proundly on a patch of brown grass was my boy's once bright pink, now dusky pink, tennis ball! Talking about Mama Mia - have you seen it? If you haven't, then you should, it's very good, Meryl Streep and Julie Walters are a hoot and Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth are also really funny - shame Pierce can't sing tho'...!

I had a call from my niece, Amanda, on Sunday. She's the one who's expecting her second baby in June. She and I have been following the progress of a UK reality TV "star' called Jade Goody who a few months ago was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Sadly, on Mother's Day in the UK, Jade passed away, leaving behind 2 little boys, aged 4 and 6. Although we didn't know Jade, both Amanda and I both shed a tear over a death that could so easily have been avoided by regular medical checks. The importance of cervical scanning and potential consequences of not having them, is not emphasised nearly enough in the UK - take it from one who really does know......... ......I hope that Jade's legacy will be that this problem will cease to be an issue and women of all ages in the UK will have regular checks.

We currently have guests here with their a lovely son called Andrew, who's taking part in the Sugarbush adaptive ski programme - check it out on their website, they do a great job. Today Andrew is not feeling great so can't ski so we hope you feel much better tomorrow Andrew and can return to the slopes.

Mother's Day...

Maxine - posted 3/23/09........ Helpful comments in blue added by Graham...

We awoke yesterday to around 3" of fresh snow! The mountain are reporting 4-5" at the top, which is good news for our skiing guests. Sadly, not quite so good for guys who recognise that it is, in fact SPRING and OK to wear shorts.

It was Mothers' Day in the UK yesterday and a bit of a problem in terms of sending Graham's Mum, May, a card as they aren't on sale here yet. One of us - that would be me - has to buy a card when they are on sale here, in May and then remember, 10 months later, where they've stashed it for safe keeping! Of course, that person also has to make sure that it's posted in time as there are no reminders of UK Mother's Day in the media here. Anyway, I did and the prodigal son took all the praise - naturally - nothing new there then!

Phil who...?

Maxine - posted 3/21/09

Another day in paradise.........................as Phil Collins would sing! Well, that's what it feels like right now!

We did manage to enjoy our own outdoor hot tub for 20 minutes on Thursday evening. Every time we do, we say to each other it's so good we must do it more often - and then we don't! It was really relaxing and we both took a beer with us - in plastic glasses of course!

We had the turkey and ham pie last night and it was great, if not rather large so it looks like we'll be eating it until at least Monday. No complaints from Graham though as he really liked it. I took Beckham for a walk today and we went three times around the Sugarbush snowmaking pond - it was glorious - just like this wonderful place that we are lucky enough and proud to live in, Warren, Vermont, The United States of wonderful America.

Spring...

Maxine - posted 3/20/09

It's official - spring is really here! The sky is blue, the sun is shining and it didn't snow yesterday, so no strawberry flavoured hats to find.

We took Beckham down tot he Sugarbush snowmaking pond yesterday and it was so beautiful, even he thought it was summer and wanted to swim in the river. Sugarbush and Mad River Glen are both still in good shape, so a wonderful time for thinking about a bit of spring skiing. We have 3 sets of guests arriving today who are here to ski and 2 sets - Michael and Shannon and Shannon's parents, who are checking the area out for Shannon's wedding next year.

Yesterday I made a turkey and ham pie and just before I put it in the over we had a call from Mike & Sandra, who own the Yellow Farmhouse Inn asking us if we fancied going out for a quick bite to eat. Silly question, of course we did! We met them at Terra Rossa, just down the mountain road and probably our nearest restaurant. The food and the company were very good and Mike & Ronda, who own the restaurant bought us a round of drinks which was very kind of them, so thanks Mike & Ronda.......much ironing and cooking baking to do today!

Strawberry Hats...

Maxine - posted 3/19/09

The winter season seems to be drawing to a close now and with and with the official arrival of spring tomorrow maybe the daffodils here will start to take a peek at the world. Fingers crossed. Snow is still being predicted for today but Graham & I really can't see it happening as right now the sun is shining and its 40F - in fact, we'll eat our hats if it does! I guess I'd better start searching for strawberry flavoured hats, after all this is Vermont and anything could happen!

I had a call from my niece, Sam, yesterday. She lives in London. She has a terrible cold or "man flu" as she calls it. You know how men never have a cold - it's either 'flu or pneumonia......Anyway, she's off to Mauritius for a week on Sunday evening with her friend Karen who is an IFS for Virgin and is working the flights out and back and has invited Sam to accompany her. How lucky is that?

Our two sets of guests check out this morning - Anne and Rob from Massachussetts, have stayed many times and we love having them here. Rob's a ski instructor. We also had another lovely couple from Canada who were here to watch their son race. I made chocolate chip cookies yesterday and gave them some to take to the boys in the race team. Three rooms to turn around today as we have 5 check-ins tomorrow.

Beckham's back leg seems a bit better today. He wasn't even interested in going out for a walk yesterday, so we knew he was under the weather, normally, he's stuck like glue to one or the other of us from around midday asking 'is it time yet.... is it time yet.... is it time yet.... is it time yet.... is it time yet.... is it time yet.... is it time yet...???"

We are currently planning to get away for a few days in mid May, after my surgery, and today we are going to book a place in Frisco, North Carolina that our friends Geno and Carolyn, who stayed with us on Monday evening have recommended. It's right on the water and best of all, dog friendly, so we can take Beckham with us.

Apple Macinbits...

Maxine - posted 3/18/09

I hope you have missed me - I've missed all of you! - Apologies for not posting anything for the last few days but being a bit of techno dinosaur, Graham does the posting from his computer and unfortunately it had to go to "hospital" for in patient surgery last week. I am pleased to confirm that it is now home, completely cured. That means we are back on line.

Well, spring has sprung in Warren, Vermont. The past couple of days have been magnificent. We took Beckham hiking yesterday on the Catamount trail and Graham wore his shorts. Honestly, two rays of sunshine and out come the shorts. It was odd - shorts and snow - you wouldn't necessarily put them together would you?I think he's in for a shock though as snow is forecast for tomorrow. We had a fantastic walk and Beckham was worn out as he runs at least twice as far as we walk as we throw the ball backwards and he goes to get it them overtakes us again. We also did the walk on Sunday but unfortunately, Beckham seems to have overdone it a bit, we think he's pulled a muscle in his back leg so no walk at all today for him.

Of course I have still being doing much cooking. I tried out a recipe given to me by my friend Julie -who, together with her husband Jonathan. own The Inn Victoria in Chester Vermont. It was a chocolate and orange cake, made with marmalade. It was fantastic. I did make an addition to the recipe though - I glazed the finished item with a marmalade and orange juice wash. If you'd like the recipe e mail me!

We popped out one of the local restaurants for a quick bite on Sunday evening. This one has been closed for a while for renovations as it has changed ownership. It's called Ake's Den and I am pleased to report back that the burger was great and the sweet potato fries were to die for! On Monday we went for dinner with our friends Fritz and Jane who have a home her as well as one in Washington D.C. They have the most beautiful standard Poodle called Iris, who is Beckham's girlfriend She's so elegant and dainty and Beckham is like a bull in a china shop - just like Posh and Becks! We had a lovely dinner - but were very surprised to see Frtiz with a walking stick. HE had broken a bone in his pelvis whilst cross country skiing and has been in some pain although is on the mend now. Another lovely evening last night with our friends Peter and Susan who own another Inn locally, The Westhill House. Susan is a good cook and dinner was very scrummy. Afterwards we played mahjong - and Peter won every game! Sorry this is rather long today but lots to catch up on!

Spring... ??

Maxine - posted 3/10/09

It snowed all day yesterday so we are now living in winter wonderland again. All very strange when, once again last night, my mother in law talked about daffodils bending and swaying gently in the breeze in sunny Dorset, UK!

Back to getting up in the pitch dark since the clocks went forward but it's worth it for the extra daylight in the evenings. This truly is a beautiful place to live and today we are going to take Beckham out for a long walk in the snow as it's actually not at all cold, over 40 degrees F is predicted.

"Dancing with the Stars" started it's new series last night and being a "closet dancer" it's compulsive viewing. Poor Graham, who has 2 left feet and for a musician is totally uncoordinated on the dance floor, has to watch it too. My prediction for a winner? Shawn Johnson. I also think that David Grier and GIlles Marini are going to blossom as the weeks go on - if they get voted to stay that is! In the late 70'and early 80's I used to run a National Disco Dancing competition with heats all around the UK and big grand final in London. The categories were for under 12's and under 16's - both doubles and solos. It was great fun and I often wonder what happened to many of the really talented children who took part. If you're out here Tara Hobbs from Hampshire (who won a place at the Royal Ballet),and Sonia Desmond and Craig Parsonage from Croydon, I would love to hear from you .I guess you're all grown up and married with children of your own now. Just like my niece, Amanda who also used to dance and took part in the competition. My sister and i used to travel all wound the UK with here every weekend to dancing competitions. Len Goodman, who is a judge on Dancing with the Stars and is now an International Celebrity, had a dancing school in the UK and many his pupils used to take part in the competition. I met Len quite a few times and I can confirm that he's a lovely man.

The Results...

Maxine - posted 3/8/09

So, what can I tell you? This morning, Graham took the blueberry pancakes out to Leah and Evan. I was quaking back in the kitchen, listening hard for a reaction. They didn't know that I had picked up the gauntlet and that the challenge was on! Then Evan called me out to the dining room and said "these are phenomenal - right from the first bite, I knew, they are definitely the best I've ever had". So, it's "official", my blueberry pancakes are the best - Leah and Evan say so and that's more than good enough for me!
It's been another glorious day in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The clocks went forward last night and we lost an hours precious sleep - we'll try and make up for it tonight by having an early night. Many of our guests departed for home this morning after breakfast and it was very sad to see Miss Ellie and her parents leave - she's really special and Graham and I look forward to when they come as they are all very good company. We shared a curry for dinner last night. Anne and Barry from New Jersey called in to see us this morning. They too have been guests at The Sugartree for the last 5 years but now they have friends who own a condo at Claybrook so now they mostly stay with them. It was great to see them though, they too are fun company. Better go now, Evan, Leah and their parents are staying another night so I have a reputation to live up to and another record breaking breakfast to plan for tomorrow!

The Challenge...

Maxine - posted 3/7/09

I told you it was 4 seasons in one day here in Vermont - today is one of those blue sky and beautiful sunshine days. You know, one of those "glad to be alive days". Spring is just around the corner and having spent an hour talking to my mother in law last night, she told me that in her garden the daffodils are starting to poke their little yellow noses out of the brown earth. She lives in Dorset, a stone's through from the ocean, and has a beautiful garden with two huge apple trees. When we were there last November it made me very sad to see all the apples rotting on the ground - if we lived in the UK I would have bottling them, making apple sauce and mile high apple pies for her freezer. "Oh, to be in England now that April's there..........." even if it is only March! No time for getting homesick - again - more cooking to do today - creme brulee for Miss Ellie, apple peach and cranberry crisp for breakfast tomorrow and more peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies for the cookie jar. I have a real challenge tomorrow as some of our guests told me they stayed in a B&B recently and had the best blueberry pancakes they'd ever eaten. Guess what's on the menu to morrow morning? Blueberry pancakes! I will report back the results even if mine come in second! We mustn't forget to put our clocks forward late tonight and to let our guests know otherwise they might miss breakfast altogether and there will be no pancake contest..........h'mmmmm.......... not a bad idea, then I wouldn't lose!

Corrie...

Maxine - posted 3/6/09

Well, they say that Vermont is 4 seasons in one day and today is one of those days - high winds and rain through the night, followed by beautiful sunshine and then, yes, snow!
Cooking again today. I made a chicken curry, dal and Bombay aloo for dinner tomorrow night as we have friends coming. We also have some friends popping in for a drink on their way to American Flatbread - a fantastic, rural and rustic restaurant here in Waitsfield - so I'm making a baked brie to share with them over drinks. Beckham does not like the high wind. He's not allowed in the kitchen or dining room so makes do with sitting on the stairs crying, shaking and peeping around the corner just to make sure we're still there to protect him! We get to see Coronation Street here on CBC (Canadian) so we caught up with this weeks offerings last night. The only problem is, we are almost a year behind in the USA and as we regularly visit the UK and can't resist watching the latest episodes, I know what's going to happen! Doesn't stop me watching here though!

New York...

Maxine - posted 3/5/09

Another busy day in Paradise! Much cooking again today - wild smoked salmon, caper and cheese deep dish quiche, amazing chocolate brownies, raspberry and cranberry muffins and roasted vegetables - the latter for our dinner. I really don't know what I'd do without the AGA - she makes cooking enjoyable and just a breeze with her instant heat and 4 ovens. It's so easy and you can cook things that need different temperatures at the same time to choose from. We're hoping to go to New York for a few days in early April with our friends Thom & Joan and we've been researching places to stay - exciting stuff! We're also planning some renovations here in the spring. In the UK we'd call it an enclosed porch but here I think it will be a sort of mud room. We're also hoping to knock two of the bedrooms into one very spiffy, large suite so as soon as the season ends keep watching the website from progress reports and pictures.

Miss Ellie...

Maxine - posted 3/4/09

Well, here we are again! It's Wednesday - groundhog day I call it. It's the day that Graham does his radio show on the local station WMRW 95.1. The show is called The Brits ...... because he only plays music by British Artists. I think it's a great show and before you ask, no, I am not biased, it really is. Sometimes he has my friend Sarah on air live from London as his UK correspondent but not this week. It's been a busy few days here at the Sugartree. The weather has been kind to us and our skiers as we've had yet more snow and Sugarbush and Mad River Glen are currently looking good. Today we have guests checking in who have been here every year since we've been here. They are a lovely couple and have the most amazing daughter - her name is Ellie and I call her Miss Ellie. I'm very excited about seeing them. I've also been cooking quite a bit - peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies, a mega (even though I say so myself) curry, muffins, scones and ginger shortbread with ginger topping. Chocolate brownies tomorrow especially for Miss Ellie!

Linda...

Maxine - posted 3/1/09 Another busy "Life in a Day" of a Vermont Innkeeper! I can testify to the fact that there IS life after laundry - because I now don't have any laundry left to do - whoppee! Some of my friends here who also have Inns think that I'm mad because I like to iron all my sheets and pillow cases. I've tried just folding them straight out of the tumbler but they just don't have the same look and feel as when they've been ironed. I'm very lucky that I have Mrs. Bridges (that's my AGA!) to press the pillow cases for me. Sheets, I mostly do myself though if there aren't too many then Mrs. Bridges can manage them too.

It's been the most beautiful day here today. A deep blue sky with the brilliant sunshine reflecting on the crisp whiteness of the newly fallen snow. One of those days when you are just happy and glad to be alive. If only my sister, Linda, was just that and able to experience this day with me. We lost her to cancer in 1993 so she never actually got to see this place. I know she would have loved it though. She was great with the sewing machine and would have been making me new drapes and duvet covers for all the rooms. I miss her every day. Still I have her daughter Amanda in my life. She's the mother of Gabriel and is expecting her second child in June.

The Inn is now all spick, span and sparkling, ready to receive its new intake of guests, starting tonight. Graham and I had some of my cranberry and white chocolate cake with a cup of tea this afternoon and even though I say so myself, it's rather scrummy!

Laundry...

Yes, the lunch party yesterday was great although a few people couldn't make it due to the extreme weather conditions we're still having here. Absolutely amazing snow for Sugarbush and Mad River Glen - some would say the best they've ever experienced. Both mountains are in great shape and if you're thinking about skiing then now's the time.

Anyway, back to Joan's ?0th Birthday lunch! We had a great time and she was so surprised to see all the other people here too. Everyone made something and there was loads of food. I made a carrot, coriander and orange soup, a salad and a sort of quiche that I adapted from a Mary Berry AGA cook book. It was so light, and fluffy - I told you the AGA is the best cook in the world - I just have to be there to help.

On reflection, we had great guests last week, as we always do. 4 couples were repeat visitors, I guess that's the greatest compliment we could wish for. The last couple checked out yesterday morning - after breakfast of course which included fresh pineapple and strawberries, honey baked banana and eggs benedict - amongst other things!

I've managed to work my way through laundry mountain as the day has progressed and this afternoon I had a telephone call from my niece, Sam, in London. She's great - such a pretty girl and we speak about twice a week. She told me about her weekend and her new boyfriend. When she called I was actually out in the back yard digging a pathway in the snow for Beckham. The snow was deeper than him and it was impossible for him to go outside to pee - too much information, I know - so I had to dig him a way through for him and little turning circle at the end so he can come back home!

We had our first evening for about 3 weeks with no guests in last night - the place is not the same when it's not buzzing with guests, so Graham & I retreated into our own cosy lounge and enjoy a glass of wine together in front of the roaring fire, whilst outside, the wind continued to blow and the snow formed a blanket of pure white across the landscape. Out of the window, I can see the snow cat grooming Lincoln Peak - yes, we're that close to the mountain!

You know, since the season started for us on 17th December we've only had about 4 nights with no guests. December 17th seems like the dim and distant past right now and Jonathan and Clara from Singapore, our first guests of the season, if you're reading this, we loved having you here and I'm writing this note wrapped up the green fleecy blanket you left behind for me - thank you!

Snowdrift...

So that was President's Week.... lots of great guests and a special treat for me as at one point we had a bunch of musicians - a drummer, a guitarist, a trumpet player and three quarters of a string quartet. I was inspired enough to get one of my guitars off the wall - then I noticed that it needed dusting, so I put it back.

There's loads of SNOW!! I know, because I had to shovel it all, every ten minutes - this morning one departing guest needed help digging his car out, absolutely, all part of the service and good aerobic exercise. Apparently. High winds meant the mountain was actually closed today - that's a first since we've been here. I drew the short straw today and got to walk the dog. Lucky me. Gale force winds and driving snow - what fun.

Not.

Lunch party for our friend this afternoon - went well and was a big surprise for the Birthday Girl. All day cooking yesterday was worth doing, a great success! This is the first night for ages without any guests in, so we're strictly feet up, pizza and a DVD. We're definitely going to get some decent sleep tonight, if the wind will let us, let's hope we still have a roof tomorrow when we wake up.

Sockeye Salmon...

Sunday is always "blues" day here. It's the day the majority of our guests check out and you'd think that maybe we'd be glad, but no, we actually feel a bit bereft when everyone's gone. We like having folks in our home - the place comes alive, it was made to have people in it. There's nothing more warming that going into the lounge and seeing people snuggled up on the sofa with a large glass of wine and a book whilst others are on the floor, in front of the fire, playing a board game and maybe more are in the quiet room playing chess. Last night did not disappoint - the lounge was well used, especially as outside the snow was falling heavily. All of our guests this weekend have agreed that snow conditions right now are near perfect and skiing yesterday was a truly wonderful experience. Not that I would know as I don't ski!

I really enjoyed making breakfast this morning as one of the dishes was a new addition to the menu - Wild Sockeye Salmon Souffles. They were very well received and the hot buttered 8 grain toast complemented them. The AGA is just the best kind of heat for cooking Souffles, they rise fantastically and are soft, creamy and fluffy.

It's going to be a real cooking day today as we have some friends coming for lunch tomorrow. One of them has a special birthday that ends in an "0" - I won't be indiscreet enough to say which one though! What's on the menu, I hear you ask? Well, Carrot, orange and coriander soup with local Red Hen bread, salmon en croute with spinach and cream cheese inside, artichoke and parmesan dip baked in a hollowed out loaf of bread and served warm with tortilla chips, some kind of quiche - I haven't made my mind up on the flavour yet, a big bowl of salad and some of those salmon souffles!

This morning I got an e mail from my brother in law in the UK and he sent me some pictures of his grandson, Gabriel, who's 2 in April. He is so cute and seeing the pictures made me a bit homesick....................still, no time for that, serious cooking to be done - and laundry - is there life after laundry?
